Uttlesford Junction and Butlers Bridge
Uttlesford Junction is a double track mainline station somewhere in England. Whilst featuring loop lines to allow slow trains to clear the mainline for express trains to pass, the station mainly serves passengers either changing trains for the branch, or for other destinations on the mainline. Freight traffic is therefore restricted entirely to through services and there are no goods or locomotive facilities. The main interest
| to the train enthusiast is provided by the variety of trains, which are to be found at the location and by workings on the steeply graded line to Butlers Bridge.
The Butler's Bridge branch is double track throughout. The community it serves is a medium sized town and the extensive passenger, goods and locomotive facilities at the station reflect the diversity of traffic that may be seen on the line. All trains terminate at Butler's Bridge so all workings involve changing and turning of locomotives. In addition to block freight trains, which have to reverse here to access an adjacent mineral line, pick-up goods trains may be seen

being shunted in the yard.
Trains on the layout may represent stock running at any time from the 1930's to the present day. Whilst a variety of trains from different eras may be seen, each train is a faithful model with the authentic formation of carriages or wagons.
Fulfen Slade

Although not on view at Audley End, look out for our "Fulfen Slade", Scalefour (18.83mm gauge to 4mm scale) layout at exhibitions. The layout is a small East Anglian branch line modelled on LNER (ex GER) practice during the late 1930's. Whilst the track plan is freelance, it owes much to the Mildenhall branch for its inspiration.
Buildings featured on the layout are models of actual prototypes; the station and goods shed being based on Rayne and the engine shed and signal box on those at Saffron Walden. All of the stock used on the layout is either kit or scratch-built, as are the buildings and even the track-work.
